Theatre director Krasimir Spassov has passed away. The doyen of Bulgarian theatre direction will be laid to rest at the Central Sofia Cemetery on January 17, Bulgarian Army Theatre said. 

Born on July 26, 1941 in the coastal city of Varna, Spassov studied drama theatre direction at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) in Sofia. There is no theatre in Bulgaria where he has not presented a play, having directed over 100 plays by Bulgarian, Russian, Western European, and US authors. At Bulgarian Army Theatre, he directed Much Ado About Nothing and How Important It Is to Be Serious, which have been performed for over 25 years now. Other plays directed by Spassov include Moliere's Tartuffe, Yordan Yovkov's Albena, and Mike Bartlett's Love, Love, Love, and Michael Weller's What the Night is For. His last play at Bulgarian Army Theatre is Moliere's The Misanthrope.

Spassov also directed two films: Just Forget That Case, which won the critics award and most successful film debut award at the National Film Festival in 1984, and Oh, My Lord, Where Art Thee?. Both films have been screened abroad.

He was a lecturer at NATFA. He received an Icarus Award for his artistic work by the Union of Artists in Bulgaria in 2012 and an Askeer Award for overall contribution to theatre art in 2021. He has been conferred international awards as well.
