National Assembly Chair Rosen Zhelyazkov, who participated in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Dublin on Thursday, said that the future of the free democratic world is impossible without freedom for the Ukrainian people, the National Assembly press service reported.

Zhelyazkov was adamant that Bulgaria will support Ukraine and its people in their fight for freedom, sovereignty and European future for as long as it is necessary. He said that the national parliaments of European Member States should state every day that the threat on Ukrainians is a threat for the entire free democratic world.

Zhelyazkov said: "Our forum is useful in its ambition to seek an anticipatory answer to the big question - how to not only reverse the destruction but also to help the Ukrainian people overcome the painful sense of no future". He said that parliaments have mechanisms to contribute to this such as legislative solutions, policies and initiatives.

The National Assembly Chair noted that Bulgaria was consistent in its unwavering support for Ukraine. Bulgaria has provided humanitarian and other assistance to Ukraine and continues to assistant with the overall reconstruction of the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Zhelyazkov recalled that the two countries have signed a Memorandum on energy cooperation and that the Bulgarian Parliament decided to start negotiations on the sale of two nuclear reactors to Ukraine.

Zhelyazkov pointed out the necessity to increase the efforts to ensure food security and rebuild critical infrastructure, to provide shelter and education for people fleeing Ukraine, to expand special programmes to support children, including those who have been forcibly deported and taken away from their families. Resources also need to be increased to ensure Ukraine's long-term democratic sustainability.
