NATO expects Bulgaria to invest USD 1.855 billion in defence in 2023, according to data presented by the alliance on Friday. This is an increase of some USD 400 million compared to 2022 and equals 1.84% of GDP.

In the nine years since the decision was made to cap allied defence spending at 2%, Bulgaria met the target in 2019 by achieving 3.13% of GDP. According to the data, Bulgaria has increased its defence spending per capita from USD 89 in 2014 to USD 167 in 2023.
