Bulgaria Records One of Its
Most Successful Participations in
Olympic Games This Century

Tokyo, August 8 (BTA special correspondent Dimiter Velyov) - Bulgaria recorded one of its most successful performances at the Olympics since the beginning of the century at the Tokyo Games from July 23 to August 8. The three gold, one silver and two bronze medals won the country 30th place in the medal standings, the best ranking since Sydney 2000, and this was achieved by the smallest group of athletes since Berlin 1936 - only 42 athletes.

All medals were won by women.

21-year-old Ivet Goranova, in her first participation at the highest sports forum, broke a 13-year gold medal dry streak for the country, triumphing in the discipline of kumite karate. Two days later, Stoyka Krasteva took the first Olympic gold for the country in women's boxing, and on the last day of the competition program, the rhythmic gymnastics ensemble also triumphed for the first time at Summer Games.

Thus, for the first time since Sydney 2000, Bulgaria finished with three Olympic titles.

The tradition in sport shooting was continued by Antoaneta Kostadinova. It was she who took the first medal, silver in the 10 m air pistol, in Tokyo on July 25.

The most successful Olympic sport in the country, wrestling, has added two more awards to its collection. Taibe Ussein and Evelina Nikolova won bronze, and Bulgarian wrestling increased its collection to a total of 71 Olympic medals - 16 gold, 32 silver and 23 bronze.

Tokyo 2020 was sport shooting legend Maria Grozdeva's seventh participation in Olympic Games, a record for a Bulgarian competitor. After her last start in the 25 m pistol, she ended her more than 30-year-long career as the most awarded Bulgarian at the Olympics with 2 gold and 3 bronze medals.

Sprinter Ivet Lalova-Collio became the first Bulgarian track and field athlete to take part in five Olympic Games after running in the 200-meter series.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics took place under unprecedented measures due to the coronavirus pandemic. All athletes in the Olympic Village were required to take daily PCR tests, and the wearing of protective masks was mandatory.

More than 43,000 people flocked to Japan from abroad, and 29 athletes out of a total of about 11,000 participants missed the Games due to positive tests for COVID-19 in the country. The total number of infected people involved in the Olympics reached 430, of whom 280 were locals.

Part of the anti-epidemic protocols was a ban on public access to the competitions. The absence of fans undoubtedly had a significant impact on the Olympic spirit, with only a limited number of athletes, officials, journalists and staff present in the halls and other sports facilities.

The next Olympics will take place in three years in the French capital Paris. Everyone hopes that the pandemic will be controlled by then and the Games will restore all their splendor, crowded halls and stadiums, extra energy and emotions for fans and athletes.
