GERB Complain to Central Election Commission about President's Participation in Campaign for
European Elections
May 13 (BTA) - The ruling GERB party submitted a complaint to the Central Election Commission (CEC) about President Rumen Radev campaigning in favour of the Socialist candidates in the European elections. Tsvetomir Paunov, the deputy head of the GERB campaign, told reporters that one example of the President campaigning were his remarks during a celebration in the southern town of Assenovgrad last weekend.


Visiting Assenovgrad for the town holiday, Radev spoke about rampant corruption and lack of government control.

GERB deputy Toma Bikov commented Monday that "the President cannot put in one sentence the claim that the government has a corruption problem and that it is negotiating with a super strategic investor".

He was referring to the President's remark for Bulgaria's wish to attract German car maker Volkswagen to build a new car plant here.

GERB asked the President "to keep silent for several more weeks" because any political talk about the country's policy to attract investment might undermine the government's efforts in the talks with Volkswagen.

Last week the Bulgarian Socialist Party submitted complaints to the CEC against Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, saying that he is using government resources for touring the country and giving away money by government decisions. CEC found that the Prime Minister did not break the rules for campaigning. LY/LN/
