The poster exhibition Invisible Traces of Murfatlar was inaugurated at the Museum of National History and Archaeology in the city of Murfatlar. The exhibition was opened at the Museum of Murfaturian History in Constanta, Romania. The event took place in the framework of the annual international conference "Pontica" and for a month now presents to the visitors of the museum the results of the work of the team of the National Institute of Archaeology with Museum with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM - BAS) in the rock monastery of Murfatlar in the period 2021 - 2023, NAIM – BAS reported.
After four phases, the interdisciplinary team was able to document the most important sections of the complex. These include the central and western sectors with about 500 graphic images, including 126 inscriptions - twice as many as previously known.
Financial support for the fieldwork was provided by the National Archaeological Institute with Museum - BAS and the National Scientific Programme "Development and Promotion of Bulgarian Studies Abroad".
The rock monastery at Murfatlar was discovered in 1957. The new data from the study shows the importance of the rock monastery at Murfatlar as a monument of exceptional value for the cultural history of early medieval Europe. With its numerous inscriptions in four different alphabets, it remains unparalleled.
