Viktoriya Tomova had a successful Olympic debut after defeating Poland's Magdalena Frech 6-4, 7-6(4) after 110 minutes of play in the first round of the Women's Singles event here on Sunday.
Bulgaria's best female tennis player broke a streak of four consecutive losses to her opponent and awaits the winner of the match between USA's Emma Navarro and Austria's Julia Grabher.
Tomova took a 3-1 lead after an early break and held her advantage until the end of the first set. In the second set, she made up a 0-2 deficit and served for the win after a run of five straight games. She led 40-15 but missed two match points and Frech got one break back after four consecutive points. The setback affected Tomova, which had her game suffer. Frech used the decline in Tomova's game to her advantage and took a 6-5 lead.
The Bulgarian athlete held her nerve and sent the set to a tiebreak, in which she took a 3-0 lead. At 5-4 she had two serves to close the match, and this time she succeeded.
