Prime Ministers of Bulgaria and Greece Boyko Borissov and George Papandreou opened the Zlatograd- Xanthi border crossing point on January 15, 2010. It was the first crossing point linking the Smolyan region with the Greek part of the Rhodope Mountains and the fourth border crossing point between the two countries. So far there were three border crossings in operation between Bulgaria and Greece along the 493 km long border: the Kulata - Promachonas, the Kapitan Petko Voyvoda - Ormenio (near Svilengrad) and the Ilinden-Exochi, the so-called Tunnel of Bulgarian-Greek Friendship.
