Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov will propose to the Municipal Council to approve a BGN 20,000 bonus for the Chernomorets Burgas basketball team, the coastal Municipality said on Wednesday. The financial prize will be a gesture of gratitude for the hard work of athletes, coaches and the club's management, as well as for the wonderful emotions that BC Chernomorets evoked with its performances among sports enthusiasts in Burgas, said the Municipality.
BC Chernomorets achieved a historic success after winning the men's Bulgarian Cup on Sunday against BC Spartak Pleven. This was the first Cup win of the team since 1975.
Meanwhile, Pleven Mayor Dr Valentin Hristov, together with Municipal Council Chair Ivan Malkodanski, welcomed representatives of BC Spartak Pleven to congratulate the team on their second place in the competition.
"For us, the Pleven basketball players are winners", said Hristov. Malkodanski also noted that the participation in the final was as an extraordinary success regardless of the result. "This team with this leadership, with the help of the Municipality and individual sponsors, is moving in the right direction and can achieve even greater success," he said.
Club Manager Bogdan Petkov noted that the Pleven basketball team played in the finals of the Cup for the first time in 28 years. "Unfortunately, we did not look the way we wanted in the final. From here on, we enter the decisive part of the season of the National Basketball League", said Petkov, adding that he hopes the team will fight for first places there as well. Team Captain Stanimir Marinov also emphasised that "the glorious years of basketball are returning to Pleven."
