SunExpress, a joint venture of Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, signed a three-year cooperation agreement with Sofia-headquartered Electra Airways for a flight programme between Germany and Bulgaria, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, which operates Varna and Burgas airports under a concession contract, said on Tuesday.

With 32 flight connections per week from seven German airports (Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Hannover, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart), the flight programme will considerably improve the connectivity of the airports in the two main Bulgarian seaside cities, the company said. Fraport are convinced that this will bring about a major increase in the flow of German holiday-makers to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

The flights will be performed by Electra Airways, while SunExpress will be in charge of the commercial planning, sales, distribution and marketing. Initially, flights will be possible to book via prestigious tour operators and travel agents. An option will soon become available to book flights through the SunExpress website.

The first flight is scheduled for late May 2025, Fraport said. Two Airbus A320 planes, one based in Burgas and the other in Varna, will perform the flights in 2025. The number of planes will be doubled in 2026, and a further three may be added in 2027 depending on market demand.
