The Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) on Monday granted a request by the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant for a phased transition to RWFA nuclear fuel produced by Westinghouse Electric - Sweden for the plant's Reactor Unit 5, the Kozloduy NPP management said.

The license lays down a set of requirements concerning revisions to existing guidelines and documents related to the use of the new type of fuel and regarding the periodical provision of additional relevant information.

On January 19, the NRA gave the green light to storing fresh RWFA nuclear fuel at Kozloduy. The first fuel cartridges were delivered on April 20. The delivery includes the amount necessary to refuel Reactor Unit 5 during the scheduled annual maintenance session which will start at the beginning of May. This practically sets the beginning of a four-year transition to RWFA fuel.
