The period for which Bulgarian Posts is entrusted to provide universal postal service is extended by 5 years, according to draft amendments to the Postal Services Act. The bill is in implementation with the restructuring plan of Bulgarian Posts. The universal postal service was entrusted to Bulgarian Posts in 2010 for a period of 15 years. The envisaged changes fulfil the European Commission's requirement that the State has to ensure that Bulgarian Posts will provide the service of general economic interest for the entire duration of the restructuring plan.

The universal postal service guarantees quality service for all users at affordable prices, no matter if they live in central or hard-to-reach areas.

The amount of the advance funds to compensate Bulgarian Posts for providing the universal postal service will be equal to the approved budget for the relevant year. The draft amendments provide that Bulgarian Posts will be entitled to receive the full amount of the compensation.
