Bulgarian MEP Tsvetelina Penkova (Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats/Bulgarian Socialist Party) attended here on Friday an international conference dedicated to start-ups. Addressing the participants, she said that for the first time, the importance of startups has been elevated to the top priorities on the EU agenda. Penkova argued that this was was made possible thanks to her team, Bulgarian startup associations and European startup associations, whose efforts led to the first pan-European startup legislation.

"The startup sector plays a key role in shaping the innovation landscape in the EU and gives a boost to the innovative spirit. The industry accounts for around 3% of the EU's GDP and provides approximately 2 million jobs," said Penkova. The MEP quoted examples from Bulgaria where start-up companies are forced to register offices or seek success in another member state or, more often than not, outside the EU Community - in the US, in the UK and even in Asia.
