Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, represented by the General Authority for Supply Commodities, aims to import more than five million tons of wheat in 2024, according to an article published by Egypt Independent on Saturday. Egypt imported about 4.5 million tons of wheat in 2023, with the biggest importers being Russia with 2.93 million, Romania with 780,000, France with 360,000, Bulgaria with 270,000 and Ukraine with 120,000.
The Advisor to the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade for Supply Commodities Affairs, Nomani Nasr Nomani, said that the Egyptian market's total annual consumption of wheat exceeds 20 million tons. The total production of local wheat exceeds nine million tons annually, compared to 11 million tons imported by the government and the private sector each year.
Russia has accounted for 70% of the wheat imported during the past few years. Before the war in Ukraine, Russia and Ukraine accounted for some 80% of the imported wheat in Egypt.
