Bulgaria's gross external debt totalled nearly EUR 42,410 million (44.4% of the projected GDP) at the end of October 2023, the Bulgarian National Bank said. This is over EUR 1,600 million (3.7%) less than in October 2022.

Short-term liabilities totalled slightly over EUR 7,150 million (16.9% of the gross debt, 7.5% of GDP), down by EUR 1,633 million (18.6%) on October 2022. Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 35,200 million (83.1% of the gross debt, 36.9% of GDP), up by EUR 7.1 million (0.02%) on a year earlier.

The General Government gross external debt topped EUR 8,941 million (9.4% of GDP) at the end of October 2023. It increased by EUR 591.3 million (7.1%) from a year earlier.

The central bank's external liabilities were nearly EUR 2,072 million (2.2% of GDP). They decreased by EUR 77.1 million (3.6%) on an annual basis.

The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions were nearly EUR 5,631 million (5.9% of GDP). They decreased by nearly EUR 698 million (11%) from a year earlier.

The external liabilities of other sectors were nearly EUR 11,411 million (11.9% of GDP). They decreased by over EUR 1,551 million (12%) from October 2022.

Intercompany lending totalled EUR 14,355 million (15% of GDP) at the end of October 2023, EUR 108.9 million (0.8%) less than a year earlier. At 33.8%, it held the largest share in the external debt in October 2023, compared with 32.4% a year earlier.
