The Ministry of Agriculture and Food will hold a competition for producers of the most successful Bulgarian products on the market in the categories of fruit, vegetables, milk, meat, and honey. The competition is expected to be launched in 2024, Minister Kiril Vatev said here on Saturday while visiting the 17th National Livestock Exhibition.

Vatev explained, as quoted by the Agriculture Ministry, that the competition aims to encourage the production of Bulgarian products that reach the market. Another idea being considered to that end is the establishment of Bulgarian shops selling regional products only, or the so-called fresh products. There are many good examples of such shops from France, Austria, and Italy. "We are working actively to provide agricultural producers and stock-breeders with access to markets and consumers, with access to local products," the Agriculture Minister said.

Another priority for the Ministry are pastures for stock-breeders and encouraging municipalities to support farmers in any way possible. Also, this year's de minimis aid for farmers and stock-breeders will reach the smallest producers that have never received support under any EU-funded programme. He specified he was referring to stock-breeders with up to 30 animals and fruit and vegetable growers with farmland of up to 30 ha.

The 17th National Livestock Exhibition, mottoed "Meetings of the elite", gathers over 500 first-class animals in Sliven, on the exhibition grounds next to the junction for the village of Mechkarevo. Elite Bulgarian examples of cattle breeding, sheep breeding, goat breeding, horse breeding and buffalo breeding can be seen at the event.
