The revenue from overnight stays in Bulgaria in May 2023 grew compared to May 2022, as well as compared to the same month of the pre-pandemic 2019. The total number of overnight stays decreased in May 2023 year-on-year and compared to the same month of 2019, according to data by the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

The revenue from overnight stays in May 2023 reached BGN 87.7 million or 16% more compared to May 2022. An increase in revenues from both Bulgarian citizens - by 20.2%, and foreigners - by 11.9% is reported. Revenues from overnight stays in May 2019 reached BGN 76.2 million, or 2.6% less than in May 2018.

NSI reported annual inflation for May 2023 of 10.1%, for May 2022 - of 15.6%, while in May 2019 inflation was 3.5%.

The total number of overnight stays in May 2023 was 1,247,700 or 1.2% less compared to the same month of 2022, with the biggest decrease - by 4.1% - in 4 and 5 star accommodation establishments.

The NSI report shows that the total number of overnight stays in all accommodation establishments registered in May 2019 was 1,449,400 or 7.8% less year-on-year.

In May 2023, the overall bed occupancy rate was 19.2%, decreasing by 1.1% compared to May 2022. Bed occupancy is highest in 4 and 5 star accommodation at 21%, followed by 3 star at 19.5% and 1 and 2 star at 15.3%.

In May 2023, there were 2,491 establishments with 10 or more beds - hotels, motels, campsites, chalets and other short-term accommodation - with 101,500 thousand rooms and 223,600 beds in them. Compared to May 2022, accommodation facilities increased by 5% and the number of beds in them by 7.9%.

In May 2019, there were 2,328 accommodation facilities operating in the country. The number of rooms in them was 107,600 and the number of beds - 236,200. Compared to May 2018, the total number of accommodation places decreased by 0.7% and the number of beds increased by 1%.
