The caretaker Government on Monday adopted updated plans for all four river basin management regions for the 2022-2027 period and national programmes for the implementation of these plans. The river basin management regions are the Danube Region, the West Aegean Region, the East Aegean Region, and the Black Sea Region, the Government Information Service reported.

The plans are strategic documents, part of the integrated water management the main objective of which is to achieve good water status for the provision of drinking water to settlements, agriculture, the economy and the environment. The update of the plans aims to reduce significant pressure on water resources from human activities, including point and diffuse sources of pollution, water abstraction, changes in the river bed and other adverse effects by implementing measures to prevent and reduce pressure on water resources and achieve good status, introducing the principle of long-term planning. This fulfils the requirements of Directive 2000/60/EC.
