Meeting behind closed doors on Wednesday, the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) endorsed an average hike of 8.42% for the price of electricity for household consumers in Bulgaria as of January 1, 2025, the regulator's press office said.

For Electrohold, which distributes electricity in the west of the country, including the capital Sofia, the price is rising by 8.36%. For EVN, the electricity distributor in South-Central and Southeastern Bulgaria, the hike is by 8.39%. For Energo Pro, which operates in North-Central and Northeastern Bulgaria, it is 8.55%. The prices include the costs of network services.

The main reason for the hike is a considerable increase in the annual market baseload price forecast for the period from July 1, 2024, until June 30, 2025, which is expected to go up by more than 23% from BGN 173.09 per MWh to BGN 212.12 per MWh, reflecting the price level reached by November 30, 2024, and the forecast for the remainder of the one-year period until June 30, 2025, the EWRC said.

The increase in the electricity price for households is also due to higher expenses to be incurred by the public supplier, the National Electricity Company, due to growing amounts of electricity to be supplied via the regulated market.
