The Cabinet has approved an updated Marine Strategy of Bulgaria 2022-2027 with a Programme of Measures (PoM), the Government Information Service said on Monday. The Marine Strategy's objectives are fully focused on the protection of the marine environment and human health.

The PoM covers the Black Sea area under Bulgarian jurisdiction - the coastal and territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone. The Programme plans actions with a broader scope to gradually reduce individual types of anthropogenic pressures in the long term, for which no measures are planned in the Black Sea River Basin Management Plan or for which the planned measures would not be sufficient to achieve a good condition of the marine environment as required by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

The Marine Strategy 2022-2027 is consistent with the international, regional and national plans and programmes and the strategic documents relevant to Black Sea conservation.

The implementation of the Marine Strategy 2022-2027 will contribute to achieving a good state of the marine environment, ensuring its protection and conservation. Its implementation is intended to limit anthropogenic pressure resulting from various economic activities and to create conditions for sustainable development and conservation of Black Sea biodiversity.
