Speaking to journalists here on Thursday, Vice President Iliana Iotova expressed the hope that on Friday the MPs will elect a chair of the National Assembly, because the risk of the parliamentary crisis turning into a constitutional one is too high. Iotova was approached for comment at an exhibition presenting the achievements of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Bulgarian contribution to it.
"I really think that the parties and the parliamentary groups will show reason so that the formation of the National Assembly can be 'unblocked' from now on", she said, adding that this scenario would pave the way to the President starting talks with the political parties and moving towards with the formation of a regular government.
Asked whether There Is Such a People's nominee for Parliament chair Silvi Kirilov could be the unifying figure, Iotova replied, "This will be decided by the parliamentary groups and parties. I see that consultations between them are continuing today."
According to the Vice President, there are "alarming signals" regarding Bulgaria's 2025 budget and the deficit in it, as well as the inability to pay salaries at the end of 2024. "This poses significant challenges for Bulgaria, and I hope that tomorrow [Friday] we will make a reasonable start," the Vice President said.
