The Bulgarian Embassy in Tel Aviv hosted a meeting for Israeli high school students as part of its initiative to raise awareness about the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during World War II, the embassy announced on its Facebook page on Wednesday.
Students from Albert Einstein High School in Rishon LeZion, who have been working on a project dedicated to this historical event, heard firsthand accounts from members of the first generation of Bulgarian Jews who settled in Israel during the country’s early years.
Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Israel Slavena Gergova opened the event. Speakers included Ino Yitzhak, Chair of the Union of Bulgarian Immigrants in Israel Ehud Olei Bulgaria; Chair of The Salvador Foundation Vered Singer; former member of the guerilla movement Avraham Ben Chodor; and Nahum Cohen, an architect, translator, and publicist who emigrated to Israel after the war.
Teachers from Albert Einstein High School and participants in the project promoting the rescue of Bulgarian Jews also attended.
The embassy described the event as part of a long-term initiative with Israel’s Bulgarian Jewish community to educate younger generations about Bulgaria’s rescue of its Jewish population—one of the rare positive episodes of the Holocaust and a testament to collective responsibility and human solidarity.
