Emerging from Friday's meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security, Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov told reporters his parliamentary group was the only one that did not support the Council's position, because they wanted the Council to have the same position as on the war in Ukraine: to condemn the aggressor.

President Rumen Radev convened the Council to discuss the risks for Bulgaria in the context of the conflicts in the Middle East. The meeting lasted three hours. Emerging from the meeting, Radev said the Council's conclusion is that there is no direct threat to the country at present.

"We yet again notice that there is double standard, very significant hypocrisy, which could cost us a lot," Kostadinov commented. "It turns out that in one case there is no problem to join the war literally on Ukraine's side, while in the other case we should show tact, delicacy and moderation," he added. In his words, Vazrazhdane's position was that the Council should condemn the Israeli aggression, the way Bulgaria condemned the Russian aggression. "In the case of Ukraine, our country claims it chooses the side of the victim, but in this case our country is practically taking the aggressor's side," he argued.

According to him, the Council's position should have read that Bulgaria does not accept unjustified aggression from one country towards another. "We have invasion of foreign territory, systematic bombing, we have the massacre of tens of thousands of innocent women and children," Kostadinov said. "Let our position not be interpreted as anti-Israel, it is pro-peace," the Vazrazhdane leader noted.

He called for more wisdom and a retreat from aggression because, in his words, you cannot fight a war with more war. "There should be peace negotiations and what is happening now is not good for world peace, and our position at the moment, unfortunately, is extremely toothless and shameful for our country," Kostadinov said.
