The Sofia Regional Prosecution Service (SRPS) has charged and detained a Swedish national for unlawfully assisting foreigners in entering Bulgaria, the prosecutors said here on Monday.

The accused, identified as M.U., was apprehended on August 31 on one of Sofia’s main boulevards. M.U. is alleged to have facilitated the illegal entry of six citizens of Morocco and Libya into the country by providing transport in a Volkswagen Polo.

A pre-trial investigation has been initiated under the Criminal Code, which prescribes imprisonment for such an offence. Following the arrest, M.U. was detained for up to 72 hours by order of the duty prosecutor.

On September 2, 2024, the supervising prosecutor submitted a request to the Sofia Regional Court for M.U. to be remanded in custody, SRPS said.
