On September 2, 3,239 students will begin the new school year in Taraclia district, which is 40 students fewer than in previous years. For the first time, 308 pupils will begin school, 17 more than last year. Bulgarian classes will be increased by one more.

The head of the education department of the Taraclia region, Lilia Sarsaman told BTA about some innovations to the curriculum, including a programme for the subject of history, traditions and culture of the Bulgarian people. According to her, until this year there was no curriculum and teachers found it very difficult how to teach the subject.

"This is the result of the efforts of the head of the Office of Policies in the Field of Interethnic Relations in the Ministry of Education and Research of Moldova, Dr. Ivan Duminika and his team, as well as of our Bulgarian teachers. They held many meetings with discussions, suggestions, recommendations and finally this curriculum was developed. From this year we will trial the programme to see what else needs to be changed or added, after which it will be approved," said Lilia Sarsaman.

She also said that the Ministry of Education has proposed this year a lot of options for expanding the teaching of Romanian and Bulgarian. This, according to her, aligns with the concept of multilingual education.
"Four schools in our district have decided that they will work on an individual plan, which includes reducing Russian language classes and increasing Bulgarian and Romanian language classes," Sarsaman said.
