The level of the Danube at Lom (Northwestern Bulgaria) continued to fall and was measured at 127 cm above sea level on Monday, September 2, which is 21 cm lower than the day before, the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR) said on Monday.

Due to the prolonged drought, navigation on the river is difficult, but there are designated places for ships to sail to avoid shoals, the EAEMDR noted. Fishermen who used to cast lines from the levees now have to wade through thick grass to reach the water. They pointed out that under these conditions, the fish stay in the middle of the river and do not come to the shallows.

Lom Municipality told BTA that the level of the Danube had dropped even more on rare occasions in the past, causing small islands to appear in the river.
