Six hotels are holders of the Green Key eco-certificate in Bulgaria, said on Thursday Stanimir Georgiev, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Bulgarian Blue Flag Movement, which is responsible for the certification of tourist accommodations in the country.

The Green Key is an international benchmark for sustainable management and practices in the operation of hotels and restaurants. Georgiev noted that such a certificate is given only to establishments meeting a whole set of environmental requirements. "Obtaining the label ensures that the facility takes care of the environment as well as social responsibility", he pointed out, adding that the certificate is awarded for a period of one year.

The first Bulgarian hotel to receive the eco label in Bulgaria is the Intercontinental in Sofia, while the other five hotels who have successfully passed accreditation and met the criteria to reduce their environmental footprints are the Topola Skies Resort and Aquapark Complex in the village of Topola, the Katarino SPA Complex in Razlog, the The Five Elements Hotel in Sapareva Banya, the Forest Houses Complex in Godech and the Rudi Family Hotel in Gorno Draglishte.

Georgiev noted that more and more foreign and Bulgarian tourists are looking for information about which accommodation facilities are holders of the Green Key. According to him, this is especially true for companies that organize corporate gatherings and conferences. "These companies have strict requirements for the places where guests stay", said Georgiev.

The Green Key certificate is managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education, which is the world's largest environmental organization with over 100 members from 81 countries. The Bulgarian Blue Flag Movement is a full member of the organization.
