Mariya Gabriel was Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in the Nikolay Denkov government, formed in June 2023 after a power-sharing agreement between GERB-UDF and CC-DB (until March 6, 2024).
Holds a master's degree in international relations and comparative politics from the Institute of Political Sciences of Bordeaux, France. Parliamentary secretary to MEPs from the GERB political party within the EPP Group from 2008 to 2009. Member of the European Parliament (EPP/GERB) from 2009 to May 2023. In 2012, Gabriel was elected Vice-President of the EPP Women. Vice-President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament from 2014 to 2017. She served as European Commissioner twice, for Digital Economy and Society (2017-2019) and for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth (2019-2023). She resigned as European Commissioner to become GERB-UDF’s prime minister designate but took the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister after her GERB party and Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria reached an agreement to share the power in the government under a rotation scheme with nine-month stints.
