The Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water (RIEW) Haskovo imposed fines of BGN 10,000 on the Maritsa 3 Thermal Power Plant in Dimitrovgrad for non-implementation of waste measures, the Inspectorate said in a report on Monday.

In February, the eco-inspectors in Haskovo carried out 123 inspections at 113 sites operating on the territory of Haskovo and Kardzhali regions. Some 50 regulations were issued to tackle inconsistencies with legislation, according to the RIEW Haskovo. Except for the sanctions against the power plant, RIEW Haskovo imposed fines in the amount of BGN 700 for illegal plowing of pastures in protected areas of the Natura 2000 ecological network and for illegal collection of hedgehogs.

In January, RIEW Haskovo carried out 60 inspections at 50 sites. Eight administrative orders and seven criminal orders were issued, including two under the Waste Management Act and five under the Biological Diversity Act.
