Bulgarian Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov, who participated in the first NATO Military Committee meeting this year in Brussels on Thursday, said that striking a balance between building critically needed capabilities and developing long-term, sustainable defence solutions is key to strengthening NATO's role as a global security guarantor. The Ministry of Defence press service quoted Eftimov as saying that this balance bears critical importance in reducing the risk of failing to implement allied deterrence and defence plans in a timely and adequate manner.

Eftimov said that this puts high expectations of the armed forces, their degree of readiness and level of training. "Achieving such capabilities is only possible through long-term investments in defence and proper planning and coordination at alliance level, as well as through developing interaction with partner countries," Eftimov said.

The defence chiefs at the forum discussed the situation in Ukraine and opportunities for providing support to the country within the NATO-Ukraine Council established in 2023. Separate sessions were devoted to discussion and analysis of the current status and future development of cooperation with partner countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

NATO Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoana, offered an analysis of the situation in the Euro-Atlantic area and outlined priority areas where military expertise will be sought to assist in making important policy decisions on the future of the Alliance and the drafting of a joint declaration at the forthcoming Summit in Washington, D.C. in July.

During the event Eftimov conducted a meeting with the Chief of the Turkish General Staff, Metin Gurak. The agenda included the actions taken by the Black Sea allied countries to deal with sea mines and ensure freedom of navigation, the conduct of exercises and other issues of bilateral military cooperation.
