Bulgarian Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov is taking part in the first NATO Military Committee meeting this year, which is taking place in Brussels on January 17 and 18, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.

The forum will discuss topical issues related to the stages of development, implementation and adaptation of various key strategic documents on building and strengthening the Alliance's deterrence and defence capabilities. The focus will be on resourcing and programmes to prepare the Alliance's integrated air and missile defence system for the transition from peacetime to wartime. Finding and achieving a balance between building the necessary capabilities and defence resources will also be among the central topics in the discussions.

Particular attention will be paid to the situation in and around Ukraine, the possibilities of supporting the Ukrainian armed forces to counter the Russian aggression and the activities of the NATO-Ukraine Council established last year. The current state and future development of cooperation with partner countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region will also be discussed.

In a separate session, the NATO Secretary General will share his views on preparations for the Alliance Summit in Washington, DC in July.
