Olympic champion Magomed Ramazanov won the European freestyle wrestling title at 86 kg after staging a remarkable comeback in the final, beating neutral-status competitor Mahamedkhabib Kadzimahamedau 9-5 on Wednesday.

This is Bulgaria’s first medal at the 2025 European Wrestling Championships.

Ramazanov took the first point on passivity and led 1-0 at the break. Twenty seconds into the second period, Kadzimahamedau secured a leg hold on Ramazanov for two points, then added two more after fending off a Bulgarian attack, making it 1-5. Ramazanov, however, dominated the remainder of the match. He took down his opponent in the last minute and added several point-scoring moves for a 9-5 finish.

Ramazanov, who became Olympic champion in Paris last year, previously earned a medal for his native Russia in 2020. He lost the 79 kg European final to Kadzimahamedau at that time.

After claiming the European title, Ramazanov said he is now targeting a world gold medal in Zagreb later this year.
