Romanian Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party Marcel Ciolacu ranks first in Romanians' voting intentions in the upcoming presidential elections, according to a poll published by Digi24 on Thursday and commissioned by the centre-right opposition Save Romania Union. Ciolacu would win 21.9% of the popular vote, or 4 percentage points more than the incumbent NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, who would have received 17.8%, if the election were to be held on Sunday.

Save Romania Union presidential candidate Elena Lasconi ranks third with 16.3%, followed by Alliance for the Union of Romanians nationalist party leader George Simion with 14.9%, his former fellow party member and current leader of S.O.S. Romania Diana Sosoaca with 12.9% and National Liberal Party candidate Nicolae Ciuca with 5.9%.

The rankings look different in a survey commissioned by National Liberal Party. According to it, Ciuca will make it to the second round of the presidential elections where he will face his coalition partner Ciolacu. The data gives the current Romanian Prime Minister the lead with 25% of the vote against 16% for Ciuca. Geoana would finish third with 14%, followed by Simion, Lasconi and Sosoaca.

The first poll was conducted between August 15 and 30 among 1,793 people. The second survey was conducted between August 24 and 30 among 1,099 people.
