Varna Medical University Vice-Rector Violeta Iotova said that the city has always stood on the European and world map of medical science. “We have always been committed to building knowledge and scientific activity,” Prof. Iotova said at the regional conference Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project. The conference took place at the BTA National Press Club in Varna on Monday.

This has become evident recently, when universities were evaluated based on their contribution to world science. “We have a huge project worth BGN 28 million, which allows us not only to attract young Bulgarian scientists to come back to Varna, but also to bring leading scientists from Europe and the world, who can train their students here,” Professor Iotova added.

The Vice-Rector said that over 60% of the students at the Faculty of Medicine are foreign students. "We strive to be innovators. In 2024 alone, the funds the Varna Medical University received are over BGN 8.5 million.” Activities continue on structural projects, the implementation and development of internal projects for scientifically applicable and innovative research, cataloging of scientific equipment, facilitating researchers’ access.

In 2024, the Varna Medical University won two new projects under the Top Research and People for the Development of European Science (VIHREN) programme, a Teaming for Excellence project proposal has been submitted under the Horizon Europe programme. If this happens, a scientific research center in the field of oncology will be built. A patent application has been filed, four are in preparation, the Vice-Rector said.

She also said that scientists often encounter obstacles in their work due to the inconsistent legislation in the field of science. "This requires a lot of work, in which universities can be good advisors," Iotova said.

BTA's Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project aims to raise public awareness and foster open dialogue about cohesion policy, local achievements, and the implementation of the EU's policy priorities. The project kicked off with a conference in Veliki Preslav in November 2024. The schedule of conferences until the end of September 2025 includes events in the following cities: Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Vratsa, Gabrovo, Dobrich, Kazanlak, Kardzhali, Kyustendil, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pernik, Pleven, Razgrad, Ruse, Samokov, Svishtov, Sliven, Smolyan, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Troyan, Targovishte, Haskovo, Shumen, and Yambol. Cross-border conferences will be held in Belgrade, Bosilegrad, Bucharest, Edirne, Skopje, and Thessaloniki. The project builds on the Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future and Europe in Bulgaria: A Common Future projects, implemented by BTA in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
