A national competition for vintage cars and motorcycles from all over the country was held in Varna on Saturday.

Kristian Zhelev, chair of the jury at the competition, pointed out that retro cars are a hobby that has grown to unprecedented proportions in the last 10-15 years. According to him, for most owners, such a machine is a good investment, because the value of old cars increases sharply over the years. He noted that a car classifies as vintage when it is at least 30 years old, not used for daily needs and in a condition close to the original.

The oldest cars presented at the competition in Varna were two BMWs produced in 1936 and 1938 respectively. The BMW from 1936 has been owned by the renown Bulgarian racer Dimitar Sokolov and its current owner has preserved it completely, Zhelev added. He also said that there has been talk of electrification of vintage cars in recent years, but he himself is not a fan of the idea of "these elegant old-timers being supplied with batteries". He noted that vintage cars cannot be accused of being major air polluters when they hit the road between three and five times a year.
