Vice President Iliana Iotova visited the Yordan Yovkov Bulgarian Sunday school with the Bulgarian Embassy in Bucharest on the first day of her visit to Romania. She met with ten of the children studying there and their parents and got acquainted with the teachers. Some of the children recited poems and Iliana Iotova told them about the Bulgarian Martenitsa tradition.

"I promised your principal a week ago that I will see you soon in Bucharest and today I am with you. I heard wonderful things about your school even before I saw it,” said the Vice President. She expressed respect for the Association of Bulgarian Schools Abroad and noted that Bulgaria has a very good education policy abroad. These schools, more than 400 by now, create a complementary Bulgarian education system. This function is very important because this is how language is preserved and developed, the Bulgarian Vice President said.

She added that Bulgarian schools abroad are not just schools, but are becoming cultural and spiritual centers for the Bulgarian community.

These schools cannot function without the help of the Bulgarian Embassy, Iotova said and expressed her aspiration for this experience to be transferred to other cities in Romania where Bulgarians live.

There are over 60 children in the Yordan Yovkov Bulgarian Sunday school at the Bulgarian Embassy in Bucharest. There children learn Bulgarian language and literature from preparatory group to 12th grade.
