The European Commission has announced that it is granting EUR 2.79 million for a study on a project to improve the electricity grids in Bulgaria and Romania. The project is part of an effort to build a smart electricity grid in the EU.
The plan is to digitize the grids in both countries and increase connectivity between them and the grids of Hungary, Ukraine and Moldova. The project has a budget of EUR 502 million to increase energy efficiency, adapt the grid to renewable sources, connect the energy market, and ensure security of the electricity supply.
The Commission will grant nearly EUR 1.25 billion to a total of 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects in the EU that are of common or mutual interest. Additional proposals from EU Member States will be allowed until the end of the year.
