European Parliament Approves EUR 10.5 Mln in Flood Relief Aid to Bulgaria

Brussels/Strasbourg, December 17 (BTA correspondent Nikolay
Jeliazkov) - The European Parliament on Wednesday approved
10,542,110 euro in aid to Bulgaria to mitigate the effects of
heavy rain and floods which have hit the country in 2013 and
2014.

The decision is subject to approval by the Council of the EU.
The aid is to be provided by the EU Solidarity Fund.

In June 2014, heavy rain flooded Bulgaria with precipitation up
to four times the monthly climatic norm, the European Parliament
said in its reasoning for the decision. Recent
disaster-inflicted damage in Bulgaria is estimated at 311
million euro.

Wednesday's decision also applies to Italy, Greece, Slovenia and
Croatia. The total amount of disaster relief aid approved by
the European Parliament is 126.7 million euro.
