EU Spokesperson: No EU Funds for Construction of Border Fences in Bulgaria

Brussels, September 19 (BTA correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) - No EU funding will go for the construction of border fences in Bulgaria, an EU spokesperson said on Monday.

Last week, the European Commission announced that it was providing 108 million euro in border security aid to Bulgaria as a result of unceasing contacts with Sofia in recent months, and would urgently consider Bulgaria's additional request for another 52 million euro.

"The funding comes from the emergency pocket of our two migration and border funds...The funding covers border management, the necessary technical equipment and the construction of reception centers," Natasha Bertaud, EU Spokesperson for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, told a news conference.

"None of the EU funding goes for the construction of fences," Bertaud added.
