EC: Bulgaria Not Required to Reduce Greenhouse Emissions in non-ETC Sectors in 2021-2030

Luxembourg/Sofia, October 18 (BTA) - The European Commission has proposed that Bulgaria be not required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 2021-2030 in the sectors not covered by the emission trading system (ETS), such as transport, buildings and waste, said the Environment Ministry in Sofia.

The statement followed the participation of Environment Minister Ivelina Vassiileva in a EU Environment Council in Luxembourg Monday which discussed new legislation to reduce greenhouse emissions in the sectors outside the ETS.

Minister Vassileva hailed the efforts of the European Commission to find new approaches to lower greenhouse emissions.

She underscored the important role of forests in absorbing and holding carbon emissions and suggested stepping up the work on forestry management among the proposed measures.
