Between 35,000 and 45,000 Working-age People Leave Bulgaria Annually - Trade Union

Silistra, Northeastern Bulgaria, October 25 (BTA) - President of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) Plamen Dimitrov said that between 35,000 and 45,000 working-age people leave this country each year. Speaking at a meeting of the Regional Council of CITUB in Silistra, Dimitrov described as "catastrophic" the shortage of staff in all sectors. In his words, the only remedy is to increase wages, which he argued should be between 12 and 17 per cent next year.

Dimitrov said that he and the leader of the Podkrepa Labour Confederation, Dimiter Manolov, have sent a letter to the heads of the nationally recognized employers organizations, inviting them to an informal high-level meeting in a bid to reconcile positions, assume responsibilities and further the dialogue.

Dimitrov also said that CITUB is working on a project on transfer of good practices in various areas, including human resources management, occupational health and safety, quality standards - ranging from large companies to their subcontractors and suppliers. The project is expected to cover over 100 big enterprises and more than 400 small- and medium-sized businesses in Bulgaria.
