Medicines Verification System
Will Be Phased
In Over Six Months

Sofia, February 6 (BTA) - The system for verification of medicines will be phased in over at least six months, Health Minister Kiril Ananiev told journalists on Tuesday, reacting to upcoming protests by pharmacy owners.

During those six months pharmacies won't be sanctioned for not operating the system.

"No pharmacies will be closed and no patients will lose access to treatment. On the contrary, the idea is to ensure treatment with verified medicines, which have been approved within the EU," said Ananiev. He interpreted the media campaign by pharmacy owners as will to continue dialogue.

The Minister said that of 3,600 pharmacies across the country, 2,400 work with the National Health Insurance Fund and have the required software. In his words, the additional expenses for the pharmacies are 200 leva. Ananiev said: "European regulations should be implemented. The date for the launch of the European medicines verification system was set in 2014 for February 9 2019." LI/PP
