April 2 (BTA) - Armenian Ambassador Armen Sargsyan awarded Bulgarian Culture and Media Committee Chair Vezhdi Rashidov a special certificate in recognition of his invaluable support to the citizens of the Armenian town of Spitak after a devastating earthquake 30 years ago.

Back then, Rashidov and his colleague, late painter Georgi Trifonov, donated the earnings from their exhibition in India and Paris to the people of Armenia.

Sargsyan noted that Armenians remember all Bulgarians who helped after the earthquake in 1988, as Bulgaria was one of the first countries to lend a helping hand. He also recalled that thousands of Bulgarians donated their savings for the recovery of the country.

During his term as a culture minister, Rashidov organized Days of Armenia in Bulgaria in 2010. He invited Sargsyan to a meeting of the Culture and Media Committee in order to organize such an event again because, in his words, Bulgarians are not very familiar with Armenia. RY/TH
