Police Cracks Down on
Vote Buying
on Reflection Day


Sofia/Lessichovo, October 4 (BTA) - Officers of the State Agency
for National Security (SANS) and the gendarmerie in Plovdiv
carried an operation against vote buying in Pazardzhik Region on
Saturday. According to unofficial information, two persons have
been arrested in Lessichovo Municipality, while another two
suspects are at large.

The detainees handed out party leaflets with 20-leva notes
tucked inside.

On October 2 and 3, the police across the country carried out
operations against violations of voting rights.

The police have seized lists, notebooks, flash memory sticks
with names, phone numbers and addresses and identified people
who have sold their vote. The police issued over 930 warnings.
Measures to counter voting right crimes continue.

A 45-year old man from the northern town of Knezha has been
charged with voter coercing and the district court issued him
with a six-month probation. A 62-year old woman in Pleven has
received a one-year probation for the same crime.

Since the start of the election campaign, 53 pretrial
proceedings have been opened and 324 checks have been carried
out.

A national joint unit comprising representatives of the
prosecution authorities, SANS and the police is continuing work.
