Ongoing Anti-corruption Raid Closes Traffic at Lessovo Border Checkpoint
Yambol, Southern Bulgaria, November 2 (BTA) - A 3-km line of waiting vehicles has formed on the road to the Lessovo checkpoint, on the border to Turkey, since Wednesday morning, after the checkpoint was closed for a special police raid, Spokesperson of the Yambol Regional Directorate of the Interior Tatyana Pavlova said.
The operation is conducted jointly with the State Agency for National Security. The national radio said that a group of checkpoint officials were arrested for demanding a bribe from hauliers.
The traffic police is monitoring traffic safety along the road to Lessovo and diverting drivers to the nearest checkpoints, Kapitan Andreevo and Malko Turnovo, Pavlova said.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry said that traffic via the Danube Bridge checkpoint between Bulgaria and Romania has been suspended in both directions, on a demand of the Romanian authorities.
