Union of Democratic Forces National Council Accepts Resignations of Chairman, Board, Assesses Performance in Elections as Poor

Sofia, April 4 (BTA) - Meeting on Tuesday, the National Council of the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) accepted the resignations of UDF Chairman Bozhidar Loukarski and the right-wing party's National Executive Board and scheduled the 22nd regular National UDF Conference for May 13, the party said in a press release.

The principal objective of the UDF Conference will be to initiate a future sustained unification of the Right.

The UDF National Council assessed as poor the party's performance in the March 26 early parliamentary elections. The National Council is of the opinion that the Reformist Bloc failed to achieve its task of bringing the right wing together.

In the elections, the Reformist Bloc Coalition (of which the UDF was a part) garnered 107,407 votes or 3.06 per cent, thus failing to clear the 4 per cent barrier to Parliament. The two other contestants in this highly fragmented part of the political spectrum: New Republic and Yes, Bulgaria, had an even weaker showing: 2.48 and 2.88 per cent of the votes, respectively.
