Health Minister Reviews Water Quality Measures in Haskovo amid Radiation Scare

Haskovo, Southern Bulgaria, April 15 (BTA) - All pipe wells providing tap water to the town of Haskovo will be carefully monitored immediately after the Easter holidays, which will end on Monday. A comprehensive diagnosis of water quality will make it possible to identify the best solution to the problem of elevated uranium content and alpha radiation detected in some pipe wells. The decision was made during a coordination meeting in the offices of the Haskovo Regional Government which was attended by Health Minister Ilko Semerdjiev and his deputy Galin Kamenov, the regional administration reported on Saturday.

Water samples will be tested as quickly as possible and the results will become known in a matter of hours, the press release said. This will provide conditions for an adequate response and a potential switchover to clean water wells. The meeting also mapped out steps towards a long-term solution to the problem of bad water quality in Haskovo.

Restricting the use of water for drinking and cooking is a preventive measure, although the risk to human health is negligible, the Regional Government said.
