Day 53: Last Group of Bulgarian Polar Еxplorers Boards RSV 421

The last group of seven polar explorers boarded the The Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421). Dragomir Mateev, Snezhana Rusinova, Petya Orozova, Nevyan Simeonov, Tihomir Stefanov, Alexander Nedyalkov and Chavdar Zhelev, who are part of the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic expedition, successfully boarded the RSV 421 around 11.00 local time on 17 February after they were transfered by the ship’s Zodiac boat from King George Island.

Another nine Spanish and two Canadian polar explorers also boarded RSV 421, to be taken to the Spanish bases on Livingston Island (Juan Carlos I) and Deception (Gabriel de Castilla).

King George is the largest island of the South Shetland archipelago, which includes Livingston Island. Several countries have set up year-round and seasonal polar bases in its western and central parts, including Argentina, Chile, Brazil, China, Peru, Poland, Russia, Uruguay and South Korea. King George is a point of departure to and from civilization because of the airport that was built on the island.

BTA's Daily News editor Konstantin Karagyozov is the only member of the media who is travelling on board the ship to Livingston Island and back and covering the Bulgarian expedition throughout its stay in Antarctica.
