Attending a Bulgaria-Japan business breakfast here on Monday, President Rumen Radev said that Bulgaria could be a true strategic partner of Japan for the region of Eastern and Central Europe not only with its strategic geographical position, but also with its quality human capital, stability, socio-economic environment and the conditions for investment and doing business in Bulgaria. The event was organised by the Japan-Bulgaria Business Association in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency (BSMEPA).

"We hope that through joint efforts we will raise the level of our cooperation to a strategic partnership," the President went on to say. "For its part, Japan is our strategic partner for the East Asia region. Not only in terms of the volume of trade, but also as a prospect for the development of our cooperation. Especially because of the fact that we are already benefiting from investments in the field of high technology and in the field of high added value economy. This is what Bulgaria is interested in," Radev noted.

The head of State pointed out that Bulgaria's participation in the upcoming  World Expo 2025 in Osaka will give the countries an opportunity to demonstrate what brings them together: centuries-old cultures, ancient traditions and leading successes in science, economy and high technologies.

"Why is Japan important and interesting to us as a model for prospective socio-economic development? A model in which centuries-old traditions coexist in a unique way with leading-edge technologies in science and industry. I had the honour and pleasure to meet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his landmark visit in 2018 and the following year in Japan, during the inauguration of Emperor Naruhito. At these meetings, we expressed a clear political will to work to raise the level of our bilateral relations, to deepen business contacts, to intensify cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, especially in the fields of economy, investment and high technology. I can openly state that my team and I are working consistently to achieve these goals," Radev told those in attendance.

The head of State said that he had visited a large number of Japanese enterprises in Bulgaria, and during his visit to Japan he had a number of meetings with leading Japanese companies and institutional representatives. "We have clearly outlined the parameters of a promising cooperation," he added. The President also recalled that representatives of Japanese corporations with a total annual turnover of nearly USD 400 billion participated in a business forum in Bulgaria in 2020. Radev also stressed that most of the efforts were hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, but now, in his words, the historic moment has come to resume and strengthen this cooperation. "Indicative of this fact is the interest of the Japanese business in Bulgaria, which is constantly growing," Radev said.

Monday's business breakfast focused on the activities of the Japan-Bulgaria Business Association, the development of the Bulgarian-Japanese business relations, as well as up-to-date information on Bulgaria's preparation for World Expo 2025 in Osaka. Among the attendees were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Innovation and Growth Tomislav Donchev, Minister of Economy and Industry Petar Dilov, Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh, Japanese Ambassador to Bulgaria Hisashi Michigami, BSMEPA Executive Director Boyko Takov, and Japan-Bulgaria Business Association Chairman Todor Kesimov.
