Wholesale Prices of Most Basic Food Products, Fruit, Veg Down in Past Week

The prices of most basic food products on Bulgarian wholesale markets decreased in the first week of February, according to data from the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets released on Sunday. The market index for wholesale food prices in Bulgaria went down by 0.22% to 2.261 points. Last week, the index stood at 2.266 points. The base level of 1 point was set in 2005.

Among vegetables, only potatoes and carrots registered a price increase—potatoes rose by 0.9% to BGN 1.31 per kilogramme, while carrots went up by 0.5% to BGN 1.29 per kilogramme. The most significant price drop was recorded for tomatoes, which decreased by 10.5% to BGN 2.96 per kilogramme, followed by cucumbers, which fell by 9.4% to BGN 3.21 per kilogramme. Other vegetables that became cheaper this week include cabbage (down 7.9% to BGN 1.37 per kilogramme), onions (down 7.8% to BGN 1.20 per kilogramme), and green leaf lettuce (down 2% to BGN 1.19 per piece). The price of garlic saw only a slight decrease of 0.4%, reaching BGN 6.05 per kilogramme.

Regarding fruits, grapefruit was the only one to rise in price, increasing by 1.1% to BGN 2.58 per kilogramme. The most notable decline was in apple prices, which fell by 13% to BGN 1.62 per kilogramme. Oranges also became cheaper, dropping by 7.1% to BGN 1.94 per kilogramme, as did mandarin oranges (down 1.6% to BGN 2.55 per kilogramme) and lemons (down 2.3% to BGN 2.25 per kilogramme). The decrease in banana prices was minimal, at just 0.1%, bringing them to BGN 2.70 per kilogramme.

Cow’s cheese became 1.8% cheaper, reaching BGN 11.53 per kilogramme, while the price of yellow kashkaval cheese (Vitosha type) rose by 0.9% to BGN 17.77 per kilogramme. Yogurt (with at least 3% fat content) dropped by 1.8% to BGN 1.33 per 400 grammes, while fresh milk (3% fat content) increased by 1% to BGN 2.40 per litre. The price of cow’s milk butter remained unchanged at BGN 3.11 per 125 grammes.

The wholesale price of poultry increased by 1.7% to BGN 6.49 per kilogramme, while the price of eggs (size M) declined by 7.5% to BGN 0.32 per piece.

Rice became 3.1% cheaper, reaching BGN 3.32 per kilogramme, while the price of beans fell by 1.6% to BGN 4.34 per kilogramme. However, lentils saw a 1.5% price increase, trading at BGN 4.41 per kilogramme. Sunflower oil dropped by 0.7% to BGN 3.25 per liter, flour (Type 500) fell by 6.3% to BGN 1.43 per kilogramme, and sugar decreased by 3.6% to BGN 1.87 per kilogramme.
